What brought you to SEP? As a kid, I always loved summer camps. Now as a counselor, I am excited for the opportunity to give SEP campers their own great experiences and memories.
What are you looking forward to most this summer? Getting to hang around lovely and inspiring people!
What's special about SEP in your eyes? The energy, creative vibes and spontaneity :)
What's your favorite SEP tradition? Skits. Even though I had to get over my stage fright to participate in them, they're by far the greatest source of entertainment for counselors and campers alike!
What was your suite theme and what inspired it? The Solar Sisterhood of the Traveling Planets (s/o to John Barry for help with the name!)
Do you have a favorite SEP story? Playing the role of "fire" (along with 15 other counselors) in a fancy date gone horribly wrong.

1. I spent the last five months before SEP in Ireland!
2. If I could, I would totally be the next Dr.Dolittle to combine two of my favorite topics: linguistics and zoology.
3. While I've taken Latin and American Sign Language somewhat extensively, I can't actually speak any languages other than English.

What is your major? My majors are Linguistics and Anthropology because I am really interested in how both modern people and people of the past manipulate language over time. I'm hoping to go to grad school and focus on linguistic anthropology or historical restoration.

How many years have you been a counselor at SEP? This is my second summer!

What about SEP keeps you coming back for more? The kids definitely keep me coming back! I love their enthusiasm and energy. We have kids every summer who get me interested in new topics purely because of their own passion for the topic. For example, one of my campers last summer was really into bird-watching and I loved how much knowledge she had to share about it. We turned that into a hall activity one day and she taught the other campers about it too!

What are you looking forward to most this summer?  I'm looking forward to our Large Group Activities like Counselor Dating Game and Lip Sync Battles. LGA's are so much for to prepare, to act in, and to watch. I think they are one of the biggest reasons this camp is so special!

What's special about SEP in your eyes?  SEP is magical because of options it gives campers. Kids have so much ability to shape what is done here in groupings, suite time, and special topics. There are so many ways the kids are able to share what they love with others.

What's your favorite SEP tradition? Goofy as it is, I think the "Eat fruit, go poop" chant is so funny!

What is your suite/room theme? The floor leaders picked Peter Pan as their theme! My decorations are all Tinkerbell themed.

What is your major? I am a Secondary Education-Social Studies major here at UVA, and I hope to be a high school history teacher someday! I really enjoy working with teenagers, and I like the flexibility that the humanities afford to teachers.

What about SEP keeps you coming back for more? Tim Hilliard, a Head Counselor last year, is a close friend of mine. He approached me in the fall of 2014 with this opportunity. I thought to myself, "Why not? I need some summer moolah." However, what I've gotten out of this experience cannot be quantified in simple dollars and cents. There is a magic about this camp, through skits, wacky activities, and so much more, that made me want to come back for round 2.

What are you looking forward to most this summer?  Other than the food at St. Anne's, which is incredible, I would say I am looking forward to seeing all of my campers from last year, as well as getting to know a bunch of new dudes and dudettes!

What's special about SEP in your eyes?  Wow, this is a tough question to answer! I think the eclectic blend of personalities found both in the staff and the campers makes SEP a truly special place. For 6 weeks a year, I get immersed in a mixing bowl of cultures and beliefs, and I get the chance to interact with so many different perspectives, something I really value.

What's your favorite SEP tradition? I would definitely say that the Talent Show is my favorite SEP tradition. Watching all of the campers go all-out and dance to silly songs is a ton of fun! Also, getting to work with the kids and bring them out of their comfort zones, while taxing, is really rewarding.

What is your suite theme? My suite theme is The Avengers! I love superheroes, and my theme gave me the opportunity to draw a New York cityscape, which was an experience. My kids also get to create their own superheroes to put on their doors!

What's your favorite SEP story? So last year, we were all sitting around during afternoon break, trying to figure out things to do with our campers. There was a drum set and a piano in the St. Anne's auditorium, so the 3rd floor guys started playing around on them. One of the counselors, Jorge, had brought his trumpet, so he started playing some riffs. I grabbed a mic and began singing about random stuff. And thus, Rabbitfoot, the world's greatest entirely improvisatory band, was born. You may hear our newest single, Cow Chairs, in a record store near you!

Do you have a favorite SEP story? Last session one of the counselors made a cheer during kickball for a team called the flying piggies that went, "when I say oink, you say oink!" I then taught it to all my campers this session and they say it every time they see this counselor. It is funny.

What are you looking forward to most this summer? I'm looking forward to getting to know the campers and hopefully making a positive impact on their lives/camp experience.
What's special about SEP in your eyes? The community. Everyone is like a huge family and all of the staff makes an effort to learn the names of everyone, including the campers.
What's your favorite SEP tradition? The skits have been the most fun so far.
What is your suite theme and what inspired it? My theme is hot air balloons and adventure because they are fun and I love to explore and travel.

3. The day after my time at SEP ends (so sad), I'll be leaving for Europe to study abroad in Spain for a semester, so these will be some of my last memories in America for a bit.

How many years have you been a counselor at SEP? This is my first year as an SEP counselor!
What brought you to SEP? One of my close friends and now co-worker, Tori, worked as an SEP counselor last summer and couldn't say more great things about the program, so I decided to check it out for myself.
What are you looking forward to most this summer? Some of the classes I take for my Youth and Social Innovation major focus on working with children, so I'm pumped to be able to actually get to spend time with my favorite type of humans (instead of just talk about them all day long)!
What's special about SEP in your eyes?  SEP does an incredible job of creating an accepting, creative, and bright environment that I have never experienced at other camps.
What's your favorite SEP tradition? I love creating skits for the campers. I've never been much of an actress myself, so it's fun to be put outside of my comfort zone while making the kids laugh.
What is your suite theme and what inspired it? The theme of my suite is Winter Wonderland. The no A/C dorms we stay in make the theme a bit ironic, but I'm hoping that the paper snowflakes and SEP Trail Map will trick us into thinking it's colder than it actually is.

I'm already having an absolute blast at SEP, and I'm so excited to see what the rest of the summer brings!

What brought you to SEP? I love the atmosphere and the people. Every single person I meet is amazing and always has something to offer.
What are you looking forward to most this summer?  Getting to know everyone on the SEP staff really well, and also getting to know the campers.
What's special about SEP in your eyes?  Every person that I have ever met at SEP has had an overall positive impact on my life.
What's your favorite SEP tradition? My favorite SEP tradition has to be the counselor trivia game. I think it is an amazing opportunity to see just how much your campers have learned about you over the course of the session.
What is your suite theme and what inspired it? My theme is ice cream, and the main driving factors were: 1. Ice cream is fantastic. 2. Ice cream is a great treat for summer time. 3. I am a terrible artist and it is pretty difficult to mess up drawing ice cream.

What brought you to SEP? I was once a camper here, so that's how I found out about SEP. I think the program is really amazing, and I love being around children, both of which drew me to SEP!
What are you looking forward to most this summer? I'm looking forward to meeting three sessions of amazing campers and getting to know as many of them as possible. I'm also really excited to sharpen my friendship bracelet making skills as well as my capture the flag skills. 
What's special about SEP in your eyes? SEP allows campers to always be curious. Inside and outside of the classroom, campers can have fun and get to know each other and also ask so many questions. I think this experience is enriching both intellectually and socially which is something that makes SEP unique. 
What's your favorite SEP tradition? I'm super excited for field day! I want to see how creative the campers can get with their team names and cheers. The games will be really fun for the campers, but I'm most excited to see their team spirit. 
What is your suite theme and what inspired it? The theme for my suite is dinosaurs. I really love dinosaurs and always have loved dinosaurs. Since I was just as obsessed with them in 8th grade as I am now, I thought the theme would appeal to my incoming campers.

What brought you to SEP? The opportunity to enhance a child's academic and social development - SEP was a really important experience for me as a kid (I was a camper 7th, 8th, and 9th grade), and I want that to continue for kids today.
What are you looking forward to most this summer?  Meeting some incredible people!
What's special about SEP in your eyes? The impact it has on a students life - I still remember my counselors and experiences from my camper days!
What's your favorite SEP tradition? The counselor dating game - I'm excited to share some good impressions
What is your suite theme and what inspired it? Nepal! I love maps and geography, and really wanted to learn how to draw a yak (this left me the valuable life skill of being able to freehand a yak!)

1. I study English and Spanish at UVA, and I'm about to go into my third year. I also really love art.

What brought you to SEP? Past counselors had recommended SEP, and when I checked it out, it sounded like a lot of fun.
What are you looking forward to most this summer?  Seeing the campers' creativity, especially as they get more comfortable at camp and comfortable with their peers.
What's special about SEP in your eyes?  I like that SEP encourages kids to be themselves, as wacky and unique as they are. It is great that SEP lets kids be creative and think about things in new ways, like through the Mental Challenge and their Special Topic classes. But, at the same time, it allows lots of time for fun games and activities, letting the campers just be kids, too.
What's your favorite SEP tradition? The counselors' silliness in answering any questions. Such as..."What did you do this summer before camp?" "Oh, I was rescuing renegade kangaroos in Australia." The counselors are an impressive group of comedians, as well as genuinely great leaders and co-workers. Speaking of comedy, the skits with rhymes are really enjoyable--introducing each class with a silly skit and pun.
What is your suite theme and what inspired it? My theme for dorm decorations was Girl Power! My campers are seventh grade girls. Right around this age is when girls start to feel a lot of pressure from peers and society to be a certain way, or fit a certain mold. I decorated each door with inspiring women of both the past and present, because I wanted to remind them that it is possible for them to be whoever they want. They can like the arts, sports, sciences, politics, etc, but not only that--those kind of things aren't exclusive. A girl can be a sporty athlete and still love wearing dresses, or be a dancer and like sciences classes.

I have already enjoyed my short time at SEP immensely, and I can't wait to see what the rest of the summer has to offer!

What about SEP keeps you coming back for more? What I loved most about SEP last summer were the connections and friendships I made with campers. I really enjoyed getting to know the kids and playing with them, and it was amazing how close we became in such a short time.
What are you looking forward to most this summer? I am really looking forward to playing more silly games, singing camp songs, and meeting another group of amazing kids!
What's special about SEP in your eyes? I think SEP is special because all of the fun, interesting, and creative activities the kids do cause them to make friends that last past camp for years afterwards.

What about SEP keeps you coming back for more? I was a camper for seven years growing up. It was my favorite place back then, and it continues to be my favorite place. The campers and counselor's create an environment unmatched by anywhere else. We like to call it "SEP magic"
What are you looking forward to most this summer? I can't wait to see all of the alter egos that the counselor's develop over the next few sessions.
What's special about SEP in your eyes? It's a place where you can be the weirdest you've ever been and it be so normal. I've never laughed so much in my life.

What's special about SEP in your eyes? SEP is a place that gives kids an opportunity to learn n grow in a safe fun environment that also has that spark of magic that is hard to pinpoint.
What's your favorite SEP tradition? Shaefer attacks always seem to happen and is heartwarming to see the campers band against them.

What are you looking forward to most this summer? Meeting a bunch of awesome kids and bonding with staff.
What's special about SEP in your eyes?  We provide such a rich and unique experience for these kids, and they teach us nearly as much as we teach them. I love how well thought out the activities are too. SEP is not just academic, and it's not just recreation. The perfect combination is what makes it special.
What's your favorite SEP tradition? I love skits! They challenge me to think on the spot and the kids LOVE them. I also feel closer to other staff when we act like fools together.
What is your suite theme and what inspired it? I did a dog theme because dogs are my favorite animal.

What's special about SEP in your eyes?  It is so camper-centered. Everything we do is focused on making the experience special for the campers. We're also close as counselors and work to know each other as friends as well as co-workers.

What was your suite theme and what inspired the theme? The Dr. Suess theme was inspired by a cartoon I drew when I was in second grade. I thought I could still easily paint them now since I could back then.
Do you have a favorite SEP story? My favorite SEP story is one of my girls that gave a very brief junior speech. It was very unsentimental but she mentioned that her pipe cleaner butterfly was now all messed up because she bent it while everyone around her was emotional. It was her own way of showing that she loved the camp even though she didn't show it on the outside. Some of the kids are so different but in such a wonderful way.

What brought you to SEP? I wanted to pass on the knowledge that it's more than okay to be geeky about the things that interest you.

What are you looking forward to most this summer?  I'm looking forward to learning from the campers.

What's special about SEP in your eyes?  The people at SEP cultivate one of the most accepting and down-to-earth environment I've ever been a part of.

What's your favorite SEP tradition? I love Counselor Trivia because it's always interesting to see what people can come up with when they're put on the spot.

What was your suite theme and what inspired the theme? My theme this summer was Roman Mythology, inspired by the Rick Riordan novels I read as a teenager.

Do you have a favorite SEP story? One of the funniest things I witnessed a camper do was during social time. We were playing BS, the card game, and amidst a particularly rowdy round a camper was sitting quietly. She was a really sweet camper who was usually very quiet, so it took me a few turns to realize that she had already gotten rid of all of her cards and won the game. This camper was actually too nice to announce that she was the winner and stop the game, so she sat there watching everyone else enjoy themselves until another counselor called her out.

2. I was a camper at SEP for three years in 9-11, but never 5-8. Yay for new experiences!

What brought you to SEP? I loved the SEP camper experience and I really wanted to see what it would be like from the other side, as I've heard it was a really wonderful and fulfilling experience for many of my past counselors.
What are you looking forward to most this summer?  Forming new relationships with a great bunch of kids
What's special about SEP in your eyes?  I definitely think the unique community that can only be found at SEP/UVA in the summertime is one of the most special aspects of SEP.
What is your suite theme and what inspired it? My theme is "The Sub", inspired by the Yellow Submarine by the Beatles. I have been a huge Beatles fan for as long as I can remember, and this theme seemed to fit both my age group and my interests!

What is your suite theme and what inspired it? Ancient Greece. I love Greek Mythology so I really wanted to integrate that into my suite decorations.
