Dear SEP Families,
Session 3 students in #helpingorhurting: The Ethics of Social Media were creative and passionate about the subject! The students came to understand just how social media can help and hurt our society.
As we discussed social media being used by teens, they were open to approaching the topic from the point of view of parents and school leaders. When we looked at politics and social media, they brought up how hashtags can bring people together over the Internet. However, it does not mean that these people are making social changes in the real world. The political activism portion of the class really resonated with students, and they realized that the world of politics has evolved because of social media and its impact on our daily lives.
Students really succeeded in discussing ideas about social media and formulating new ideas based on the opinions of others in the class. They also did well with the creative aspects of the course, including a design-a-social-media-app competition and their final projects on a social media topic of their choice.
We watched a documentary on the political revolutions of the Middle East and how social media was used to organize protests. It was a bit challenging for the students to fully grasp because their background knowledge was limited; however, they really seemed to understand the media portion and how it plays with political activism. I hope students enjoyed the course and wish them a great end to summer break!
