Dear SEP Families,
In Session 3, students conceptualized the idea of genre and specifically delved into the topic urban legends by analyzing how stories are spread. We examined why various stories and legends to see how they were created and how they spread over time. Students then applied these concepts to develop their own scary stories. Additionally, students spent time thinking about their own fears in order to understand how authors and filmmakers create a frightening experience.
Students really enjoyed analyzing various stories to determine what the motivation for fear is. One of the more challenging parts of the session was getting students to think about how fears have changed over time. Students were challenged by the idea that what people found scary in the past might seem tame to us today. They met that challenge by tracing the evolution of certain character types, such as vampires and ghosts, across literature and film.
